Good Health Also Means Good Dental Health

I know of a person who has just spent over two weeks in the hospital. He was having chest pains and shortness of breath. After initial tests in the ER, they found that he had a blood clot in his lung. Then they dis covered that he had a bad blood infection and they said the source was come bad teeth. He was put on blood thinners and antibiotics thru an IV. He then had to have oral surgery where they cut his gums open and removed roots of seven dead teeth from his mouth.

Now I’m sure that’s not the full story because he has other health problems too and has been in a terrible car accident and hurt his back. In other words there are other things going on inside him besides his bad teeth.

It does make you wonder however if some of your medical problems could be linked to tooth disease. If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while it may be time to go and get a dental checkup.

Talk About Being Too Thin

June 29, 2010 · Filed Under Health Care · Comment

Some people might joke about wanting to have a condition whereby you can eat all you want and never gain weight, however for one young lady in Texas it’s a reality that is no laughing matter.

She lives in Texas and her name is Lizzie Valesquez. She has a very rare condition that doctors are unable to diagnose. She says she has to eat every 15 to 20 minutes to keep her energy up and consumes about 6000 to 8000 calories per day. She wears a size triple 0 clothes.

People who see her think she is anorexic and she says that upsets her because it’s not the case. She’s five foot two and looks like a skelaton. Doctors continue to test and observe her and don’t really have any idea what her future will be. She’s written a book and it’s supposed to be out in September.

The photo of her that I saw looks like it’s fake but as I read about her I had to keep in mind that there are plenty of people in the world who have very strange disorders and conditions, some are so rare they may only share the disease with one or less people. It is a sad thing for her but I still think some of us would wish to have her problem for a day or two. Still I wish her luck and better health.

Sick Sarah

Sarah is my cat. I’m not sure what exact breed she is but she’s mostly grey with an orange spot on the top of her head. We have her mom too, but Sarah is much smaller and very delicate looking even though she is about three years old. Anyway we sometimes let the cats out and they always return within a couple hours. They stay close to the house and lay in the sun.

A few days ago we let Sarah and her mom out and as usual they returned a short time later. Sarah seemed fine at first but then I heard her cough a couple times. Cats do sometimes cough up hairballs or cat food if they eat too much so I didn’t think anything about it. A couple hours later though, I saw her try to walk and she was tripping over her four legs. I knew something was very wrong. over the next day or two she got progressively worse and at one point couldn’t even lift up her head. We thought she was near death. We fed her drops of water and watched over her and somehow she started to get better. It’s been four days since then and she’s getting better each day.

We think she consumed something outside that may have poisoned her, but didn’t eat enough to kill her. We are relieved and grateful that she’s getting stronger every day and we won’t be letting her out anytime soon.

That Smoking Toddler

June 25, 2010 · Filed Under Health Care · Comment

I actually saw a video of that little boy who smokes and it was disgusting to watch. One thing I did notice about it was that he handled the cigarette with the dexterity of an adult or at the very least a much older child. It just didn’t look natural. It made me think it was a very small midget even though he appeared to be a toddler. Another thing was the child was very fat. So in addition to the smoking he’s over eating as well. Sometimes I really wonder if these stories are real or not.

All that aside, it looked terrible that he was smoking and doing it in front of his parents. I again wonder what they will do when that kid asks for something else that’s age inappropriate like sex or a beer.

2 Year Old Smoker

This story is unbelievable. Indonesia there supposedly is a two year old who not only just smokes cigarettes but smokes 40 of them per day.

His father says he doesn’t see a problem with this and that the child is healthy. His mother says she wants him to stop but if they don’t give him the smokes, he has a massive tantrum and hits his head against the wall and screams. Giving him the cigarettes is the only way he’ll stop his fit. Mom also says he’s become a fat child who can barely keep up with other kids his age. The father thinks he’s healthy enough.

Is this for real? I would ask how the kid got the habit to begin with. Who started him and showed him how to smoke? Mother and father need to buy themselves some good head phones and put the kid in a helmet or safe confined area and let him have his fit. I mean who is running this home anyway?

Toddler Mauled to Death

What is happening to parental common sense and our children? This family lived in Southern California and had a 2 year old boy and 2 pit bulls. For a reason not yet determined, one of the dogs attacked this child and he ended up dying from massive head trauma.

While I know it’s true that there must be a couple exceptions to the belief that pit bulls are killers, I also cannot deny that too many of these attacks are from this particular breed of dog.

Maybe it’s safe to say that most people who elect to have pit bulls train them to be killers on purpose, either to be cool or for supposed protection. All I know is that this breed seems predisposed to maul to death people and other animals.

The bottom line is that this little boy is dead and died in the most horrific way by this pit bull. That’s all I need to know. I would never expose a child to such a dog. While it might be gentle with the owner, the alpha dog of the pack, who knows how it sees the rest of the family, the neighbors, and especially the children in the house.

One Year Old Severly Beaten

May 27, 2010 · Filed Under Health Care · Comment

There was a house robbery in South Africa where a one year old girl and one adult were severely beaten.

The only things missing from the home were a laptop and a modem. The police there made 2 arrests but did not say whether the items were recovered or if more arrests were pending.

The one year old baby girl is in grave condition with a massive head wound. I find it hard to accept that adults get beaten that badly, but to do that to a baby? For what? What kind of animal does that? This is becoming a real dangerous world for little ones. How can someone look at the innocence in those eyes and betray that innocence in that way?

How can we better protect ourselves and more importantly, our babies?

How To Enjoy Food Without Salt

May 25, 2010 · Filed Under Health Care · Comment

In my efforts to avoid sodium and salt I tried buying food items that had no sodium in them. Most items like catsup and certain lunch meats have been pretty good, however I was shocked by the lack of any taste from canned salt less soups. I couldn’t even eat them after tasting them.

First what I had to do was grow up and be an adult about the situation. Salt is very bad for me, so either I let it slowly kill me, or live with a few tasteless meals. Everything we eat doesn’t have to be the be all end all of meals.

The second thing I had to do was look for alternatives to the sodium and table salt. I did find some but not in salt substitutes. Those to me are terrible. Salt is salt and no imitation comes close. What did add a lot of flavor was lime juice which really brought out food flavors. Also a low or no salt hot sauce or hot peppers minced or chopped added a great deal of flavor. I also make my own salsa which also adds flavor.

Watch your blood pressure and weight, get a checkup and decide for yourself how much sodium and salt you can have, then be an adult and eat for health and not pleasure.

More About Salt

May 23, 2010 · Filed Under Health Care · Comment

Rockin FreeForgive me if you’ve heard this from me already, but if you have it’s worth repeating.

Right now my husband and I are prime examples of salt intake extremes. My husband who has perfect blood pressure, uses salt like it’s a main course. Not only does he thrive on fast, fried, and processed foods he adds salt to everything without even tasting the food first. At least once every day or two I catch him just pouring the salt from the container right into his mouth without any food. Again, he’s thin and has perfect blood pressure and he’s been doing this salt thing for years and years.

I on the other hand am so bloated from water that I can’t look straight ahead or down because half of my vision is covered by the huge swollen bags under my eyes. I’ve lost fine use of my hands because they are so swollen it feels like I’m wearing gloves, big heavy gloves. My feet and ankles hurt and look like balloons. When I get this bad I have to stop eating anything with high sodium for at least a week before the water goes down. No fast food, no lunchmeats, nothing from a can and no fried foods. I am so sensitive to salt and sodium that I’ve had to find alternatives to making food taste good.
