Strict Parents/Fat Kids
A study has been conducted that says parents who are strict are likely to have fat kids. They say this may be due to the fact that strict parents are putting more pressure on their kids so the kids are eating as a reaction to the extra stress.
It makes me wonder how this relates to the theory about girls with anorexia. It seems that in their cases they choose not to eat because they have a controlling parent or parents. They said that these kids are exercising the only control they feel they have over themselves and their bodies.
Can both be right?
My first reaction is that the first study I cited is in error, however I have discovered over the years that different people will react differently. In fact even the same person will or might react differently in different situations. For example, my daughter had to go to the youth home a couple times for skipping school and trespassing. The first time she was gone I was so depressed I stopped eating and lost a good deal of weight. I was actually almost to my desirable weight. She came home and I was doing good. A couple more pounds and I would have fit into my perfect weight jeans. Then she got in trouble again. This time I was so depressed I began eating. Everything. I gained all my weight back and so much more.
My conclusion? These studies are a waste of time and money. Every person is different and will react differently given the situation.
I can tell you what I believe makes kids fat;
- They watch how a fat parent eats all their lives
- The parent uses food to comfort the child
- The parent keeps a lot of junk food in the house
- The parent over serves food at mealtimes
- The parent serves a lot of fatty fried foods and fast foods
- The parent supplies money so the kid can buy fast food outside
Now can I have the money that was used to fund the above study?
