Today’s Angels
I had the oppurtunity recently to experience America’s health care system up close and personal. I had been feeling very tired and ill for quite a while, but without health insurance I put off going to the doctor. I finally stopped at an ER when my eyesight got so bad I could hardly drive anymore. I told them I had no insurance, but it didn’t matter. Within a half an hour I was told that I was dying and they were not going to let me leave the hospital.
The team of doctors on my case gave orders to the nurses to run two central lines in me and they piggy backed three other medications, for a total of five bags going into my veins. Five or six viles of blood taken every two hours, and finger prick blood tests every half hour. Huh! I told my family I was sick!
Anyway the point of my blog is the care I got while I spent four days in the hospital. The doctors did care and the nurses cared for me even more. No one made me feel like a bum for having no insurance. They were compassionate and caring. They gave me hope and saved my life, and they gave their tenderness and humor and encouragement. There really are angels among us, and for this I am grateful.
